At least 12 people died and nearly 25 were injured in a bus crash in India’s southwestern state of Maharashtra on Saturday, a local policeman confirmed to Xinhua over phone.
The road mishap occurred in Raigad district of the state when the government-owned bus fell into a ditch. There were over 40 passengers on the ill-fated bus.
The accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. local time near the Pune-Raigad border, while the bus was traveling from Pune city’s Pimple Gurav area to Goregaon, said the local cop.
Rescue work is going on at the site of the crash.
“The road accident in Raigad, Maharashtra, is unfortunate,” Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah tweeted. “The local administration is engaged in relief work.”
