In the early hours of Thursday, a man allegedly driving under the influence rammed his car into police barricades set up for a ‘nakabandi’ on Gokhale Bridge, located on the Western Express Highway in Andheri East. The man, identified as Devpriya Nishank, tried to escape a routine check by hitting the barricades and colliding with three other vehicles in the process.
Nishank, 32, was driving a high-end car while inebriated, and his female companion was also intoxicated. Upon seeing the police checkpoint ahead, he attempted to evade the authorities but crashed into the barricades, sparking a chase by police officers and passersby.
The police and bystanders pursued Nishank until he was forced to stop. When he refused to open the car door, the crowd broke the glass to restrain him. According to officials, Nishank was then physically assaulted by the mob before being detained.
The police detained Nishank and took him for a medical examination to confirm his alcohol consumption. He is a businessman residing in Worli. Authorities are investigating the incident further and have taken necessary legal actions.
The reckless behavior of the driver has raised concerns about road safety and the effectiveness of police checkpoints in the city. This incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
