Srishti Tuli, a 25-year-old Air India pilot, was found dead in her rented flat in Andheri, Mumbai, on Monday. Police believe she died by suicide, reportedly hanging herself with a data cable, though no suicide note was found.
Her boyfriend, 27-year-old Aditya Pandit, was arrested on Tuesday after a complaint from Tuli’s family. Her uncle alleged that Pandit had harassed and humiliated her in public and had pressured her to change her eating habits, specifically stopping non-vegetarian food.
Tuli had called Pandit early on Monday morning, telling him that she would end her life. Pandit, who was traveling to Delhi at the time, hurried back to Mumbai. Upon arriving, he found the flat locked and called a key maker to open it, discovering Tuli hanging inside.
She was rushed to SevenHills Hospital in Andheri, where she was declared dead. Police investigations revealed that Tuli had been living in Mumbai since June of the previous year, having met Pandit while studying in Delhi.
Pandit has been charged with abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code and was sent to police custody. The case is still under investigation.
