MUMBAI: Indian scientists carrying out genome sequencing tests have identified the new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16 as the main cause for the ongoing rise in Covid cases in the city and state.
Dr Rahul Pandit, senior intensivist from H N Reliance Hospital, said there is no cause for panic despite the slight increase in cases. “Three years into the pandemic, we know that senior citizens and people with chronic conditions are at high risk of severe Covid. This is the population that needs to be protected with masking and vaccination. The rest of the population should be on their guard, but no panic,” said Dr Pandit.
