The number of militants of the IS terrorist group * (“Islamic State” * , the organization is banned in the Russian Federation ) has grown to 6.5 thousand. At the same time, most of them are concentrated near the Afghan-Tajik border. This was stated by the head of the Joint Staff of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Colonel-General Anatoly Sidorov, reports today, February 14, IA Sputnik Tajikistan.
According to him, they, as well as numerous other extremist groups located in the north of Afghanistan, pose the main threat to the stability of the Central Asian region.
He added that the militants were stationed in the provinces of Badakhshan, Kunduz and Takhar.
Earlier, Stanislav Zas , who headed the CSTO until the end of 2022, said that Afghanistan is still a source of danger for Tajikistan.
According to him, all the challenges that were before remain: the dangers of a terrorist nature, drug trafficking, extremism.
